Susan Jacobson is a psychotherapist in private practice, counseling individuals, couples, and families and providing group therapy for adults and adolescents. She specializes in counseling for relationship enhancement, women's issues, separation and divorce, single parenting, survivors of incest and sexual abuse, life threatening illness/wellness, and adult children of alcoholics. She is experienced in the treatment of chemical dependency as well as other compulsive behaviors (workaholism, eating, shopping) and has particular interest in working with addictive relationships/co-dependency. She is a recognized practitioner of clinical hypnosis for stress reduction and smoking cessation. A 1977 graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Master in Mental Health Program and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Ms Jacobson is director of the Columbia Center for Counseling and Psychotherapy. Columbia Magazine named her Howard County's best therapist. She has taught at the Traditional Acupuncture Institute and served on the Steven Daniel Jeffreys Foundation's Loss and Change in the Workplace Committee. She has been a small group facilitator for the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Intimate Human Behavior series and has taught in the Women's Studies Departments of area colleges. A frequent guest on local and regional radio and television, discussing co-dependency, the addictive process, and communication between men and women, she also appears before business, government, and community groups. Ms Jacobson provides consultation and training to community organizations, psychosocial agencies and businesses, working with employees to enhance communication and improve staff effectiveness and teamwork. She has served on the boards of directors of the Howard County Mental Health Association, Citizens Against Spousal Assault, the American Mental Health Counselors Association, and The Emerging Women, Inc. At the request of the County Executive, she was a participant in the 1989 Howard County Drug Summit. Currently she sits on the Advisory Board of the The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. She was appointed by Governor Glendening in 1999 to serve on the The Judicial Review Commission for Howard County. Other professional memberships include the American Academy of Psychotherapists, the Baltimore Society for Psychoanalytic Study, the Maryland Society for Clinical Social Work, and the Employee Assistance Professionals Association. |
